Science
The science

Polaris, at the tip of Ursa Minor's tail, is the current "North Star"; because Earth's axis points almost exactly at it, it stays nearly fixed all night, marking true north. For thousands of years it has been the guiding star for navigation and direction. But because Earth's axis wobbles in a precession with a cycle of about 26,000 years, the pole star changes with the ages — about 5,000 years ago, in the age of Egypt, it was Thuban in Draco; about 12,000 years from now it will be Vega in Lyra. Polaris itself is also a Cepheid variable, its brightness changing ever so slightly.

Mythology
The myth

It is said to depict Arcas, son of the nymph Callisto who became Ursa Major. At the moment he raised his bow without recognizing his mother, Zeus lifted them both into the sky and set them side by side as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Both bears have unusually long tails, said to have been stretched when Zeus flung them skyward by pulling on their tails. To sailors, the star at the tip of this little bear's tail was the guide to whom they entrusted their lives.

The Constellations Above You Right Now

A real-time night sky map that computes the stars actually visible from your location.

Real-time Night Sky

Real-Time Night Sky Constellation Map

Which constellations are above your head right now changes from moment to moment with the time, the date, and where you are. As Earth turns, the stars rise in the east and set in the west; as Earth orbits the Sun, the constellations on view shift with the seasons. Byulgil computes this real sky from J2000.0 astronomical data and draws the constellations visible from your location right now as a live map and in AR. No install needed — just open your browser and see tonight's sky.

What is Byulgil?

Byulgil is a stargazing web app that computes the real night sky for your location, anywhere in the world, in real time. Byulgil means "Star Loads", in Korean. Use your current location (GPS) or pick a major city — Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Sydney — to see the sky exactly as it appears there, right now. Star positions come from real J2000.0 equatorial coordinates, converted to horizontal coordinates for your time and place. On mobile, AR mode lets you point your phone at the sky to overlay the constellations in that direction.
