The scienceAt the heart of Cancer lies the "Beehive Cluster" (M44, Praesepe), an open cluster of about 1,000 stars that appears even to the naked eye as a faint haze of light. It was among the first objects Galileo confirmed to be a swarm of stars through his telescope. Cancer is the faintest of all the zodiac constellations, yet when the Sun crosses it around June each year, it once marked the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer.
Mythology
How it became a constellationWhen Heracles fought the nine-headed water serpent Hydra, Hera sent a giant crab to hinder him. The crab pinched the hero's foot with its claw, but was crushed beneath his heel and destroyed at once. Hera, taking pity on the crab that had obeyed her command, set it among the stars; but its stars are all faint, said to mirror the crab's ill fate.

With no bright stars of its own, Cancer is hard to find directly, so use the "empty space" between the bright constellations on either side as your guide. On evenings between winter and spring, look about halfway along the line joining Pollux in Gemini and Regulus in Leo, where a few faint stars form an upside-down Y — that is Cancer. Under dark skies, the hazy glow at its center (the Beehive Cluster) catches the eye first and reveals the location.

At the heart of Cancer lies the "Beehive Cluster" (Praesepe, M44), a hazy patch even to the naked eye that, through binoculars, becomes a spectacular scatter of dozens of stars. It was one of the first objects Galileo resolved into a swarm of stars with a telescope. To the south is the smaller, older open cluster M67 — one of the oldest open clusters in our galaxy and important for the study of stellar evolution.
📍 Where to see it (US · Canada · UK · Australia)
From the US, Canada and UK, faint Cancer climbs high in the southern sky on late-winter and spring evenings (February–April), passing near overhead, though its dim stars (magnitude 3–4) call for a dark sky. From Australia it appears in the northern sky, inverted and only moderately high, on summer evenings. Everywhere, the hazy Beehive Cluster is the easiest way to pin down its location.
