The scienceCanis Minor is a tiny constellation with really only two bright stars, yet its chief star Procyon is the eighth-brightest in the night sky. Procyon lies just about 11.5 light-years from Earth, a nearby star, and like Sirius it is a binary with a white dwarf companion. In winter, Procyon, Sirius (in Canis Major), and Betelgeuse (in Orion) form a great equilateral "Winter Triangle," a landmark for navigating the winter night sky. The name Procyon means "before the dog" in Greek, given because it rises a little ahead of Sirius in Canis Major.
Mythology
How it became a constellationCanis Minor is drawn as the smaller of the two hunting dogs that follow Orion, or as a dog racing across the winter sky alongside Canis Major. Another legend calls it Maera, the faithful dog of the farmer Icarius, who learned to make wine from Dionysus, god of wine. When his master was unjustly killed, Maera led his daughter to where the body lay, and the gods, taking pity on this loyal dog, raised it to the sky as a constellation.

In the winter sky, use the "Winter Triangle" — the large equilateral triangle formed by Sirius (the sky's brightest star, in Canis Major), Betelgeuse (Orion's red star), and Procyon — and you can find this constellation at a glance. The bright star at the easternmost (upper-left) vertex of that triangle is Procyon, the lead star of Canis Minor. Canis Minor is very simple: just two stars, Procyon and Gomeisa above it, make up nearly all of it.
✨ What to look for
Honestly, Canis Minor has essentially no bright deep-sky objects. It has only two bright stars and skirts the edge of the winter Milky Way, but there are no notable nebulae, clusters, or galaxies — so here the main attraction is the lead star Procyon itself. Like Sirius, Procyon is a binary with a faint white-dwarf companion, but that companion is extremely difficult to observe.

Lying near the celestial equator at about +5° to +8°, Canis Minor is visible from every one of these countries. From the US, Canada, and the UK it crosses the southern sky on winter evenings (December–March) as part of the Winter Triangle. From Australia the same stars ride high in the northern sky during the southern summer, though the little dog appears inverted.
