Centaurus, holding "Alpha Centauri," the nearest neighboring star to the Sun. It is another guise of Chiron, the wise half-man, half-horse.

The scienceThe chief star of Centaurus, Rigil Kentaurus (Alpha Centauri), is the nearest stellar system to the Sun, a mere 4.3 light-years away. It is in fact a triple system of three stars, and the smallest and faintest of them, "Proxima Centauri," is the closest star to the Sun (4.24 light-years); an Earth-like planet was found orbiting it, making it the foremost candidate in the search for extraterrestrial life. Together with the second star, Hadar, the pair are famous as the "Southern Pointers" that point the way to Crux, the Southern Cross. Sadly, their declination is so far south that they are hard to see from most of Korea.
Mythology
How it became a constellationLike Sagittarius, Centaurus represents the centaur race of half-man, half-horse, but it is usually taken to be Chiron, the wisest sage among them. Unlike the wild and violent other centaurs, Chiron was a master of medicine, music, and prophecy who reared heroes such as Achilles, Jason, and Asclepius. When this immortal was accidentally struck by one of Heracles' poisoned arrows and left to suffer a wound that would not heal, he gave up his own immortality of his own accord, passing his deathless body to Prometheus before closing his eyes in peace. Zeus, honoring that noble sacrifice, set Chiron in the sky as a constellation.

In the spring southern sky, below Virgo and Hydra, this constellation hangs very low on the southern horizon. From the US, Canada and UK only the upper part of its body (stars like Menkent) briefly clears the southern horizon — and only from the southern US at that — while the famous Alpha and Beta stars stay below the horizon and cannot be seen. You'd have to travel to the Southern Hemisphere, where it rides high, to properly appreciate the whole constellation.
✨ What to look for
Centaurus is a deep-sky showcase, home to "Omega Centauri" (NGC 5139), the largest and brightest globular cluster in the entire sky, and "Centaurus A" (NGC 5128), a powerful radio galaxy crossed by a dark dust lane. But both objects lie at a declination around -43°, so low that from most of the US, Canada and UK they barely graze the horizon even at transit — a tough catch even from the far-southern US, yet an easy, high target from Australia.

Centaurus is a far-southern constellation. Its brilliant pointer stars Alpha and Beta Centauri lie near −60° declination, so they never rise from the UK, Canada, or the northern US — only the constellation's northern edge (stars like Menkent, around −36°) skims the southern horizon from the far-southern US, while Omega Centauri and Centaurus A stay effectively out of reach. From Australia, by contrast, Centaurus rides high in the south: Alpha and Beta blaze overhead and Omega Centauri is a naked-eye showpiece.
