The science

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant so vast that, placed where the Sun sits, it would swallow the orbit of Jupiter. Already at the twilight of its life, it is predicted to explode as a supernova within the next 100,000 years (soon, in astronomical terms). Below Orion's belt, the "Orion Nebula" (M42) is a place where stars are actively born, the nearest stellar nursery visible to the naked eye.

Mythology

How it became a constellation

Orion, son of the sea god Poseidon, was a giant hunter. When he boasted that "he could hunt every beast in the world," Hera, displeased, sent a small scorpion to sting his heel, and so Orion met his death. The gods set both heroic adversaries among the stars, but placed them on exactly opposite sides of the sky so they would never meet. That is why, as Scorpius rises in the east, Orion flees and vanishes into the west.

🔭 How to find it

On a winter evening, look to the southern sky for three bright stars in a straight row — Orion's Belt — and you'll recognize Orion at once. Reddish Betelgeuse to the upper left of the belt and blue Rigel to the lower right form opposite corners of Orion's rectangle. Follow the belt down to the left to reach Sirius (in Canis Major), the brightest star in the night sky, or up to the right to reach Aldebaran in Taurus.

What to look for

Hanging from the belt in the "Sword" is the Orion Nebula (M42), the nearest stellar nursery, visible as a hazy patch even to the naked eye; even a small telescope reveals the Trapezium, its quartet of newborn stars. Beside Alnitak in the belt lie the photographically famous "Horsehead Nebula" and the "Flame Nebula" (NGC 2024). This is the classic starting point for deep-sky observing in the winter sky.

Straddling the celestial equator, Orion is visible from every inhabited latitude on Earth. From the US, Canada and UK it dominates the southern sky on winter evenings (December–February), standing well up around 40–50°, then vanishes into the western dusk by May. From Australia it rides high overhead in the northern-to-central sky during the southern summer, but flipped — the Belt is the same, yet Betelgeuse sits below it and Rigel above, so the hunter appears upside down.
