The science

Aquarius belongs to the zodiac, but with few bright stars its shape can be made out only under dark skies. Its chief stars Sadalsuud and Sadalmelik are both yellow supergiants thousands of times brighter than the Sun, yet lie so far away (about 540 and 760 light-years respectively) that they appear as third-magnitude stars. Within it lies the "Helix Nebula" (NGC 7293), a shell of gas cast off by a dying star; one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth, it is nicknamed the "Eye of God." Each May the "Eta Aquariid meteor shower" is produced by debris left behind by Halley's Comet.

How it became a constellation

Aquarius is said to depict Ganymede, the beautiful youth of Troy who served drink to the gods. Smitten with his beauty, Zeus transformed himself into an eagle (Aquila) and carried him up to Olympus, making him the eternal cupbearer who pours nectar for the gods. In the constellation he is drawn tipping his water jar, pouring water down from the sky, and its stream flows into the mouth of Piscis Austrinus, the Southern Fish.

🔭 How to find it

On an autumn evening in the southern sky, Aquarius — hard to find on its own for lack of bright stars — is best located using a distinct neighboring landmark. Below the southern side of the Great Square of Pegasus, faint stars are spread over a wide area, and among them, near "Sadalmelik," a group of four stars forms a small Y (the Water Jar) — the key marker of Aquarius. Low in the south, the lone first-magnitude star Fomalhaut (in Piscis Austrinus) marks the end of the stream of water.

What to look for

Aquarius holds the "Helix Nebula" (NGC 7293), a ring of gas shed by a dying star — one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth, nicknamed the "Eye of God," though it is spread out so widely that dark skies are needed. Another planetary nebula, the "Saturn Nebula" (NGC 7009), is small but bright and shows even in a small telescope. The bright globular cluster M2 also lies in the northern part of the constellation, appearing as a hazy ball through binoculars.

From the US, Canada and UK, Aquarius occupies the southern sky at a modest height on autumn evenings (September–November), culminating around 40–50° from the US but lower from Britain; its faint stars (mostly below 3rd magnitude) need a dark sky to trace. From Australia it rides high, near the zenith, on spring evenings, far better placed than in the north. In early May the Eta Aquariid meteor shower, from Halley's Comet, favours the pre-dawn sky, especially at southern latitudes.
