The science

In the direction of Cygnus lies "Cygnus X-1," the first black hole candidate, discovered in 1971. It was observed as gas stripped from a companion star pouring into the black hole and blazing with powerful X-rays, becoming the first decisive evidence for the existence of black holes. The chief star Deneb is among the most luminous of all stars in absolute magnitude; a blue-white supergiant, it shines as a first-magnitude star even though it lies about 2,600 light-years away.

How it became a constellation

Cygnus is said to be the swan into which Zeus transformed himself to approach Leda, queen of Sparta. Another legend tells that when his friend Phaethon fell to his death in a river while driving the chariot of the Sun, the grieving Cycnus waded into the river each day to search for his body. Apollo, taking pity on the sight, turned him into a swan, and after death he became a constellation, remaining forever beside his friend.

🔭 How to find it

On a summer evening, look for a large cross shape (the "Northern Cross") straddling the middle of the Milky Way, and you've found Cygnus, the swan with wings spread. The bright star Deneb, marking the tail, is one vertex of the Summer Triangle, while the star at the beak end along the long axis of the cross is Albireo. The swan is drawn flying southward down along the Milky Way.

What to look for

Albireo, at the swan's beak, is considered one of the most beautiful double stars in the night sky, its golden primary set against a sapphire-blue companion in striking color contrast. Near Deneb lies the "North America Nebula" (NGC 7000), an emission nebula shaped like the continent, and close by are the "Veil Nebula" (NGC 6960/6992), a supernova remnant, and the bright open cluster M39 — making this a showpiece of Milky Way observing.

From Canada and the UK, Cygnus is circumpolar — Deneb (declination +45°) never sets — and from the US it stands nearly overhead on summer evenings (July–September), with the Milky Way pouring through the Northern Cross for a spectacular sight under dark skies. It remains visible from spring into late autumn. From Australia the swan flies low across the northern sky on winter evenings, upside down and never far above the horizon.
