The scienceCetus is the fourth-largest constellation in the sky, representing the mythical sea monster Cetus. Its star Mira (Omicron Ceti) was the first "periodic variable star" humanity ever discovered, its name meaning "the wonderful" in Latin. An aging red giant, it rises and falls in brightness over a cycle of about 332 days, from 2nd magnitude (plainly visible to the naked eye) to 10th magnitude (seen only through a telescope) — a change of hundreds of times over. Its star Tau Ceti, closely resembling the Sun and lying just 12 light-years from Earth, has long been a prime target in the search for a "second Earth" and for extraterrestrial life.
Mythology
How it became a constellationCetus is the sea monster that threatened Ethiopia. Sent by Poseidon, god of the sea, in his anger at Queen Cassiopeia's arrogance, the monster swept the coasts and plunged the kingdom into terror, and an oracle demanded Princess Andromeda as a sacrifice. Just as Andromeda, chained to a seaside rock, was about to be swallowed, the hero Perseus appeared on his way back from slaying Medusa and turned the monster to stone with Medusa's head. Even this fallen sea monster rose into the sky, taking its place beside the autumn royal constellations it had once threatened.

On autumn evenings, this large constellation occupies the broad sky south of Pisces and Aries. Use the bright star Menkar (the whale's head) at the eastern end and the bright star Diphda (the whale's tail) at the western end as your two anchor points, and sketch the wide body between them. As the fourth-largest constellation in the sky, its figure is big, and since bright stars are sparse, it helps to identify Menkar and Diphda first.

Cetus's highlight is the variable star Mira (ο Ceti). It's an aging red giant whose brightness swings by hundreds of times — from a naked-eye 2nd magnitude down to a telescope-only 10th magnitude — over a period of about 332 days, so depending on when you look it may be visible or not. Another key target is the spiral galaxy M77, the prototype Seyfert galaxy with a bright nucleus, which shows even in a small telescope as a hazy disk.

Cetus straddles the celestial equator but reaches down to about −18°, so from the US, Canada, and the UK most of this large constellation is visible on autumn evenings (October–December), with only its southern parts sitting low. The bright stars Menkar and Diphda and the variable Mira are all easily found. From Australia the Whale rides high, from the northern sky nearly to the zenith, during the southern spring.
