Science
The science

Pisces belongs to the zodiac, but with no bright stars it is a large, faint constellation whose shape can be made out only under dark skies. Two fish swim in different directions, bound together by a long ribbon, and the knot where the ribbon meets is the chief star Alrescha (meaning "the knot"). It holds a place of great importance in astronomy: because of the precession of Earth's axis, the "vernal equinox" — the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator northward in spring — has drifted out of neighboring Aries and now lies here in Pisces. And so today spring begins when the Sun passes through this constellation.

Mythology
The myth

This is the story of Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, and her son Eros. As the two rested by a riverbank, the monster Typhon — a beast half man, half animal that even the gods feared — suddenly bore down upon them. In their panic the mother and son turned into fish and leapt into the river to flee, and so as not to lose each other in the confusion, they bound their tails tightly together with a long cord. Thus the two swam safely away and escaped the danger, and these two fish and the cord that joined them rose into the sky to become a constellation.

The Constellations Above You Right Now

A real-time night sky map that computes the stars actually visible from your location.

Real-time Night Sky

Real-Time Night Sky Constellation Map

Which constellations are above your head right now changes from moment to moment with the time, the date, and where you are. As Earth turns, the stars rise in the east and set in the west; as Earth orbits the Sun, the constellations on view shift with the seasons. Byulgil computes this real sky from J2000.0 astronomical data and draws the constellations visible from your location right now as a live map and in AR. No install needed — just open your browser and see tonight's sky.

What is Byulgil?

Byulgil is a stargazing web app that computes the real night sky for your location, anywhere in the world, in real time. Byulgil means "Star Loads", in Korean. Use your current location (GPS) or pick a major city — Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Sydney — to see the sky exactly as it appears there, right now. Star positions come from real J2000.0 equatorial coordinates, converted to horizontal coordinates for your time and place. On mobile, AR mode lets you point your phone at the sky to overlay the constellations in that direction.
