Science
The science

Capricornus is the smallest in area of all the zodiac constellations and its stars are faint, so the trick is to first find the outline of a large triangle, or a smiling mouth. The chief star Deneb Algedi (meaning "the tail of the goat") is in fact a nearby star just 39 light-years away. It holds a special place in the history of astronomy: long ago the "winter solstice," where the Sun sinks farthest south during the year, lay in this constellation, and its line of latitude is still called the "Tropic of Capricorn." Here too, in 1846, the planet Neptune was discovered right where prediction placed it, in the direction of Capricornus.

Mythology
The myth

Capricornus is said to depict the god Pan. When the monster Typhon attacked as the gods feasted by the Nile, Pan tried to escape by turning into a fish and leaping into the river. But in his haste the transformation came out only half finished, so that only his submerged lower half became a fish's tail while his upper half stayed a goat — the comical form of the "sea-goat." Zeus, delighted by the witty escape and the ludicrous shape, raised Pan into the sky as a constellation.

The Constellations Above You Right Now

A real-time night sky map that computes the stars actually visible from your location.

Real-time Night Sky

Real-Time Night Sky Constellation Map

Which constellations are above your head right now changes from moment to moment with the time, the date, and where you are. As Earth turns, the stars rise in the east and set in the west; as Earth orbits the Sun, the constellations on view shift with the seasons. Byulgil computes this real sky from J2000.0 astronomical data and draws the constellations visible from your location right now as a live map and in AR. No install needed — just open your browser and see tonight's sky.

What is Byulgil?

Byulgil is a stargazing web app that computes the real night sky for your location, anywhere in the world, in real time. Byulgil means "Star Loads", in Korean. Use your current location (GPS) or pick a major city — Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Sydney — to see the sky exactly as it appears there, right now. Star positions come from real J2000.0 equatorial coordinates, converted to horizontal coordinates for your time and place. On mobile, AR mode lets you point your phone at the sky to overlay the constellations in that direction.
