Science
The science

The chief star Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, the most dazzling of all stars visible from Earth apart from the Sun. This is partly because the star itself is unusually bright, but mostly because it lies a mere 8.6 light-years away, very close by. Sirius is in fact a binary of two stars; orbiting it is a white dwarf known as "Sirius B," a star with the mass of the Sun compressed into a body the size of Earth, one of the first white dwarfs ever discovered. In ancient Egypt, the dawn rising of Sirius was taken as the signal of the Nile's flood and used as the basis of the calendar.

Mythology
The myth

Canis Major is drawn as the faithful hunting dog that follows the giant hunter Orion. It trails at Orion's feet across the winter sky, chasing the hare Lepus. Another legend calls it Laelaps, a magical hound that never let its quarry escape; set to chase a fox fated never to be caught, it fell into the paradox of "the dog that always catches and the fox that is never caught," whereupon Zeus turned both to stone and set them in the sky. The name of its chief star, Sirius, means "the scorching one," "the dazzling one" in Greek.

The Constellations Above You Right Now

A real-time night sky map that computes the stars actually visible from your location.

Real-time Night Sky

Real-Time Night Sky Constellation Map

Which constellations are above your head right now changes from moment to moment with the time, the date, and where you are. As Earth turns, the stars rise in the east and set in the west; as Earth orbits the Sun, the constellations on view shift with the seasons. Byulgil computes this real sky from J2000.0 astronomical data and draws the constellations visible from your location right now as a live map and in AR. No install needed — just open your browser and see tonight's sky.

What is Byulgil?

Byulgil is a stargazing web app that computes the real night sky for your location, anywhere in the world, in real time. Byulgil means "Star Loads", in Korean. Use your current location (GPS) or pick a major city — Seoul, Tokyo, New York, Sydney — to see the sky exactly as it appears there, right now. Star positions come from real J2000.0 equatorial coordinates, converted to horizontal coordinates for your time and place. On mobile, AR mode lets you point your phone at the sky to overlay the constellations in that direction.
